Research Unbound: A Library Orientation for Transfer, Upper-Division, and Graduate Students

This micro-course, which involves a series of online modules, will help you learn about the University Libraries' resources available to you, and will equip you with the skills you need to be an effective researcher.

Evaluating Search Strategies

Evaluating Search Strategies and Refining Results

Now, let's shift gears and focus just on finding the right information in the OU Libraries' resources for your academic needs. As you search through our resources, you'll need to figure out if your search strategies are bringing you the kinds of results you need. Also, you'll find that searching once, in a single resource, often isn't enough. Expert researchers use the information they find in a search to focus in on, or expand out, their research. Advanced searching tips will help you maximize your research and hone in on the important and relevant information for your topic.

So far, you've learned about keyword search strategies, academic databases, and evaluating information - now, it's time to put those skills together and determine if your search strategies are helping you find the information you need. This will help you determine if your searches are effective. This lesson will help you practice:

  • Reading search result records
  • Evaluating results for relevancy
  • Limiting results
  • Mining your results for additional search terms
