You may find that utilizing materials available through OU Libraries is the best way to eliminate the need for a textbook. This could be accomplished by having students read current research articles on various topics, assigning chapters from a library ebook, or utilizing other resources such as videos and freely available content.
The library has a wealth of resources. You can start by searching various databases or locating a specific journal that is essential to your field. If you need assistance locating materials, don't hesitate to contact your department's library liaison.
Library ebooks can be utilized as course materials, but first, you must ensure the title you include in your syllabus permits multi-users to access it.
Ebooks have limits on the number of users and the length of time they can be used. The publishers establish these limitations. Some books can be downloaded as PDFs in full or by chapter, while other titles may restrict downloading and printing.
The library record for each ebook will indicate any user restrictions. It's best to confirm the type of access allowed for your chosen title with your library liaison. (The ACMI has some funds available to purchase greater access if needed.)
We do not recommend using ebooks with limited access as replacements for a textbook purchase. Students could utilize these titles in a reserve capacity, but this wouldn't replace the need for students to purchase a copy.
Ebooks from library
If you use an ebook available through the library, the statement below can help your students use the material. Please contact your library librarian or the ACMI Coordinator to ensure you include the correct link.
The following is an example library eTextbook statement:

The digital version of the course textbook is available for free through OU Libraries. Accessing the textbook requires that you authenticate (log in) with your NetID. You are permitted to read the textbook online and/or download content to read offline. If PDF downloads are available for your book, it is recommended that you download a copy to ensure uninterrupted access to the content. Some books have limits on the number of users that can access the title at the same time. If you are unable to access the title, check back later.
You should state any user limits specific to your title, such as 2-hour loan periods.
Linking to materials from Library OneSearch:
We recommend using a link in Moodle or your syllabus to materials from OU Libraries. For items discovered and accessed through the LibraryOneSearch tool, you can copy and paste the URL from the browser address bar at the top of your browser window.
Linking to materials from the Library databases:
When linking from a database, look for the Permalink option or share link option.
