Determining Whether a Journal is Peer-Reviewed

Once your have located relevant articles on your topic, you will want to make sure the journals in which they are published are reputable. There are a number of techniques, tools, and indicators to help you make this determination and to avoid "predatory" and low quality journals. One of the main ways the scholarly community ensures quality is through the use of peer review.

Some databases like CINAHL have a "Peer Reviewed" filter so you can limit your search to just those journals that employee a peer-review process. Others, like PubMed, do not offer that filter, so you need to consult other sources to make the determination.

One very basic technique is to go to the journal's website - you can locate the URL through LibraryOne Search if OU subscribes to the journal or simply do a Google search - and look for an "About" link. Reputable journals will disclose their peer review process along with their editorial boards, aims and scope, where they are indexed, and other important information.

These online directories contain detailed information about journals including their peer-review status.
