What is the Library of Michigan?

The Library of Michigan, according to their mission statement, was created by the Michigan Legislature to “guarantee the people of this State and their government one perpetual institution to collect and preserve Michigan publications, conduct reference and research and support libraries statewide”.  Located in Lansing, MI, it is open to the public for legal, historical, and genealogical research.

What does the Library of Michigan offer?

The Library of Michigan holds information and documents related to:
  • Michigan History-- city, county, and state historical documents
  • Michigan Law-- government information at state, regional, local, and tribal levels as well as a repository of federal government documents
  • Michigan Literature-- books about the state of Michigan or authored/illustrated by Michiganders
  • Genealogy Resources-- materials to help users trace their family histories

How do I borrow from the Library of Michigan?

You can borrow materials in two different ways:
  • In person, with a Library of Michigan library card (available to residents of the state as well as anyone attending a Michigan college or university-- Oakland University students automatically qualify)
  • Request something the Library of Michigan owns through MeLCat, the Michigan eLibrary Catalog-- Oakland University can receive requests made this way, and we’ll let you know when your item arrives here on campus
