Scholarly Articles

Look for these characteristics in scholarly articles: 

  • Abstract - or summary provided at the beginning of the article
  • Methods section - how the research was conducted
  • References - articles used by the authors are listed at the end.
  • Level of language used - professional, scientific language is found in scholarly articles. Popular articles are written at an 8th grade reading level and are meant for the general public.

This 3-lesson, self-paced micro-course will teach you to:

  • Describe the kinds of information you’ll find in scholarly and popular articles, and identify the differences between these kinds of resources.
  • Identify the sections of a scholarly article as well as the kinds of of information you can expect to find in each section.
  • Explain strategies to read scholarly articles meaningfully and intentionally, and pick out the strategies that will be most useful as you read scholarly articles in your discipline.
