Borrowing Materials

Adaptive Technology

One adaptive computer station is available on an adjustable-height table in the Library's Learning Commons (North Wing). The station provides the following software and comes equipped with a large-print keyboard. Noise-canceling headphones/microphones are available for check out at the Service Desk. 

Software includes:

  • Dragon Naturally Speaking (voice-to-text dictation software)
  • Kurzweil 1000 & 3000 (text to speech software)
  • Inspiration (visual mapping, outlining and writing software)
  • JAWS (screen-reading software)
  • ZoomText (screen-enlarging software)

Assistance for these programs is available at the Technology Help Desk (North Wing of Kresge Library, second floor).

Physical Facilities

The University Libraries is committed to making its facilities physically accessible in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), but this is a work in progress. For access to materials or resources in libraries, please contact the library staff or the Disability Support Services office.

  • There are two main elevators in the middle of the library providing Braille lettering and access to all floors in Kresge Library.
  • Wheelchair-accessible drinking fountains are located between the restrooms on each floor.
  • Adjustable-height tables are available in the north wing of the Learning Commons.
  • There is an ADA-compliant, gender-neutral, accessible restroom on the 1st floor of Kresge Library.
  • Service animals are always welcome.

 

Ahern Accessible Collaboration Room (Room 218)

The Ahern Accessible Collaboration Room is a 4-5 person room equipped wall-mounted, touch screen TV at accessible height and easily movable furniture. The room can be booked by OU students, faculty, and staff via LibCal.

Retrieving Materials from the Libraries' Collections

Upon request, staff at the Service Desk will retrieve materials from the collections. To request an item, click on the "Place Request" link in the catalog. You may pick up materials at the Service Desk. Patrons are encouraged to bring an assistant if a large number of materials must be retrieved. If your disability makes it difficult for you to visit the physical Library, please do not hesitate to contact the library staff or the Disability Support Services office for assistance. Returning Library Materials

If patrons are registered with Disability Support Services and need to return library materials, please contact the Service Desk at 248-370-4425. Access Services staff can coordinate a pick-up of library materials on Circle Drive or at the library's loading dock.

Printing & Photocopy Services

Staff at the Service Desk and at the Technology Help Desk, on the 2nd floor of Kresge Library, will help patrons needing assistance with printing. In addition, the printing station in the South wing of the 2nd floor has a print-release station set at a wheelchair-friendly height.

Staff at the Service Desk and at the Technology Help Desk, on the 2nd floor of Kresge Library, will assist patrons with photocopying. Patrons are encouraged to bring an assistant if large quantities of photocopying are needed.

Library Instruction

OU librarians offer customized tours and instruction to facilitate learning about library resources and services. Library guides will be made available in other formats upon request.
