Oakland University Archives and Special Collections occasionally offers unpaid, for-credit student internships. Internships are open to Oakland University students who can enroll in credit-based internship courses at Oakland University.

The intern may help with any of the following tasks:

  • Inventorying, organizing, and describing collections
  • Scanning documents and uploading them to the digital repository
  • Helping prepare a physical or virtual exhibit
  • Doing research on selected aspects of the history of the university
  • Caring for materials
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred qualifications

  • Interest in libraries and archives and willingness to learn
  • Reliability
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to understand and adapt to a variety of tasks
  • Good problem solving skills

Expectations

The intern is expected to work in the archives the number of hours required by the department issuing the credit-based course. The intern’s schedule, typically on weekday mornings, will be determined in collaboration with the Archives staff depending on the intern’s availability. Regular weekly schedules are expected, although some flexibility is possible.

Archives staff will introduce the intern to the collections, the facility and equipment, and the history of Oakland University. The intern will learn a variety of archives-related tasks and will have many opportunities to conduct projects of interest to them. In exchange the student is expected to come to work regularly, to work diligently and carefully, and to complete tasks as requested by staff.
