Complete AMA citations should include the following components:

  • Authors' surnames and initials. All contributing authors should be listed in the citation, unless there are more than 6 contributing authors. In the latter case, the names of the first 3 contributing authors are used, followed by the words "et al."
  • Article or chapter title, when cited.
  • Book authors', editors', and/or translators' surnames and first initials. All contributing authors should be listed in the citation, unless there are more than 6 contributing authors. In the latter case, the names of the first 3 contributing authors are used, followed by the words "et al."
  • Book or journal title. Include subtitle, if any.
  • Volume number and/or volume title. Include if there is more than 1 volume.
  • Edition number. Include only if an addition other than the first.
  • Publisher's name
  • Copyright year
  • Page numbers. Include only when specific page numbers are cited.
