Happy Public Domain Day 2024!
Public Domain Day occurs each year on January 1st and is an observance of when copyrights expire and works enter into the public domain in the United States.
For creators (authors, artists, etc.), their work will enter the public domain 70 years after their death. Therefore, the works of all creators dying in 1953 have just entered the public domain.
In addition, books, films and music created in 1928 just entered the public domain due to the Copyright Term Extension Act.
Notable items entering the public domain in the United States include:
• Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence
• The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht
• House at Pooh Corner by A. A. Milne, illustrations by E. H. Shepard
2024 also marks the long-awaited arrival of Steamboat Willie into the public domain – featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Read the details about it -- “Mickey, Disney, and the Public Domain: a 95-year Love Triangle.”
