NRS 3012 - Research for Evidence-Based Practice

PICOT Example

Asking is fundamental to the evidence-based decision-making process. A well-built question includes five parts, referred to as PICOT that identify the patient problem or population (P), intervention (I), comparison (C), outcome (O), and timeframe (T).

General Topic:
The effects of aromatherapy on postoperative nausea and vomiting.

Specific PICOT-formatted research question:
Among postoperative patients, does the use of aromatherapy as a nursing intervention compared to no aromatherapy lead to decreased nausea and vomiting over a 30-day period?

P = postoperative patients
I  =  aromatherapy as a nursing intervention
C = no aromatherapy
O = decreased nausea and vomiting
T = 30-day period
