Gender & Sexuality Programs and Resources at OU

Oakland University is committed to creating an atmosphere of advocacy, understanding, and support for all students, faculty, and staff.

The Women and Gender Studies (WGS) program at Oakland University investigates the systems of gender, power, and representation that shape the lives of women and men, girls and boys. As an interdisciplinary field of study, WGS scholarship puts gender - what it means to be masculine or feminine - at the center of analysis. Click here to visit the WGS program's homepage.

The WGS program enables participants to better understand the intersections between gender, gender identity, sexuality, culture, and social dynamics. For more information about the program, click here. Participants can obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree or a minor concentration in Women and Gender Studies during their time in the program; course requirements for each level can be reviewed at the links included above.

The LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) minor cuts across disciplinary boundaries and investigates what is means to divide people into social categories of "male" and "female," "straight" and "gay," or "bi" and “queer.” The minor in LGBTQ studies combines historical, social science, interpersonal and institutional investigations of sexualities, sexual identities and gender identities in U.S. and global contexts. Click here to visit the LGBTQ minor's homepage. For program requirements and coursework, click here.
